John Day - An 18th Century Withernwick Born Poet This little booklet is a amazing discovery, made by a descendent of his called Pauline Partridge at a car boot sale. John was born in the village back in 1764, what is now to us a very remote age - that age when industry was just beginning and England was a largely rural place. It is quite remarkable that a man of relatively humble origins should have been sufficiently well educated and, more importantly, so deeply romantic and sensitive as to produce these lovely poems. The booklet does include a story of John's life backed up by the poems. Please take the time to read them, the sentiment may seem a little strange but that is is the magic of them, so evocative of a distant time. Return to Gallery Return to Tales |
